Our efforts to connect with the city were dampened by a few factors. Some personal and some with the city: Their hyper-focus on completing the Trails and Parks & Rec Master plans, their staff level and requirements to keep operations running smoothly, and change in staff - one key player we had established a great rapport with had left last year. Our feedback and input had been well understood and considered in the Parks & Recreation master plan. Now as they begin to execute and prioritize the items in the 10 year master plan, it's our job to help try and get the pumptrack prioritized as early as possible in that 10 years. Now with the addition of DeleoBikePark  , we have a much closer option to Corona, but that doesnt mean our interest in a local pumptrack is over. We think it's important to have a pumptrack IN the community in which kids that live in Corona can ride/walk to from their homes or school. The Deleo bikepark is still behind HEAVY traffic after school/work and still might not be feasible to get to before dinner on a weeknight. \

In 2024, GenerationMTB intends to re-ignite the discussion of an official asphalt pumptrack prioritization and a private/public partnership to develop bike features on unused City land or an existing park with space for it.

It has been difficult to connect with city staff through the holiday season, but we've re-established communication lines. Here's few notable items:

• Rock Vista park is still on the table for a pilot program.

• The pilot program is being researched and presented by the new Trails Planner Brett Dawson and will be discussed internally w/ city staff with updates coming from that meeting.

• Our "BMX Mayor" Tony Daddario (former Factory Redline Team rider) is excited to get a pumptrack in Corona! He's provided some feedback to the City Manager to help get the ball rolling. 

• The City may acquire additional undeveloped land that is already zoned as recreation. Although this may not mean a pumptrack, it's likely an opportunity for some nature trails for biking, hiking and related amenities. 

• American Ramp Company has made in-person contact with the city staff and provided information about velosolutions and other ramp/bikepark options.

Corona has a new Mayor! Tony Daddario served in District 2 and has now been elected Mayor! I recently reached out to congratulate Mr. Daddario and ask for his support for a pumptrack in Corona. This was his response:

"I can tell you with 100% certainty that I personally think a pump track is exactly what Corona needs. As a former proud member of Factory Redline (in the early 80’s, out of Neil’s Cyclery in Anaheim,CA) who could have only dreamed of something as cool as a pump track in my city. I share your desire to bring one to Corona. In fact I have mentioned it no less than a dozen times to Dr. Turner our Director of Community Services. "

What a cool thing to have a BMX-friendly Mayor! We look forward to working with him to gain progress on this project!

Austin & Bobby from GenerationMTB met with city staff to review existing park plans and see how a pumptrack could be integrated.  The meeting took an interesting turn that started to look more like building a bike park than a pumptrack, but we are still gearing up for BOTH! We are tentatively set to meet again in December 2022 to continue planning. Here are some of the main takeaways from the meeting:

A Community Lead Bike Skills Park

They would like to start a pilot program with dirt features that can be started BEFORE the finalization of the Parks & Rec Master plan (Due to finalize and present to council Sept 2023). The project will be a bike skills park (think Sapwi!) , but could include a dirt pumptrack. 

• • They are looking for COMMUNITY SUPPORT and INVOLVEMENT for this project. 

    • This is to hopefully serve as a model for how to get features in the city - "If you want this, SHOW us, dont just tell us" 

  • The intent of this project is that it can be agile. If there's no community interest, it can be filled in and reconsidered for a different park feature. Park features like skateparks or asphalt pumptracks are very expensive and end up with a "sunk cost" if they miss the mark with the community. This project will allow us to adapt to community needs and get it right when it comes time to build something permanent.

  • The pilot program should serve as a learning opportunity to help form a final plan that is included in the parks and recreation plan for a Pumptrack. The success of the "Community Lead Skills Park" project will directly impact the willingness and level of interest to include a pumptrack or similar features in other areas of Corona.

  • City staff will be putting together a rough timeline on how to plan for this. We need to get the community involved and voices heard from neighbors, bikers, existing park users, etc... 

  • They provided us with a document from a consultant "best practices for skateparks" which a lot of it applies to us, but I'd like to see if we can provide bike-specific statistics and building guidance. https://skatepark.org/uploads/Best-Practices-MAIN-TSP-SBPG-2022-Newest-Links.pdf 

Phase 1:

• Plan and build a community-lead skills park in partnership with the city. 

• Obtain a modular pumptrack to gauge community interest at events or specific park sites for periods of time.

• Measure the community interest and learn.

Phase 2:

• Integrated plan with the Master Plan (for the next 10-15 years!) - this would be the permanent pumptrack, bike park, skatepark.

• Uses input and learning opportunities from phase 1 

What is needed from the GenerationMTB community? 

Volunteers! We need people to:

• • Help contribute to the planning and design

  • Execute the building of the features - this is a community-lead project supplemented and sanctioned by the city. 

  • Assist with maintenance once it's built

  • Show up to events! 

  • Provide input for ancillary park features (What would pair nicely with the bike park features to be family friendly? i.e. walking paths, shaded sitting. bbqs, types of play structures, etc.)

  • Help connect us with sponsors and experts. If you know local businesses or people in the bike industry that can help us make this a reality, we want to connect.
